Mount Vernon (near Washington) http://www.mountvernon.org/ http://www.mountvernon.org/archaeology/
Monticello (Virginia) http://www.monticello.org/ http://www.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/fnart/fa267/18house_monticello.html http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/Monticello.html http://www.savingmonticello.com/
Hearst Castle (California) http://www.hearst-castle.org/
Vanderbilt House (New York state)
Vizcaya (Miami)
Stan Hywet Hall (Ohio)
Lyndhurst (New York state)
The houses in Newport and surroundings
The White House (Washington DC) (it is open for visit) http://www.whha.org/

duncanHearst Castle (California) is one of my favorites.
BrightEyesFamous tourist mansions...
I live in CA (USA) and you must see "The Winchester Mystery House" and a previous post suggesting "The Hearst Castle" was an excellent suggestion..however, be prepared to spend several hours on the tours..they take a long time to walk all those stairs and across the grounds.

Use the internet searches or go to a good travel agent for other great places to go..also review "Architectural Digest" magazines (and ones like it)..

Happy traveling!
